Upon receiving the news that the Northfield campus of Northfield Mount Hermon School would be sold, NMH alums (which includes me) were promised that the Northfield campus would go to something GOOD…NOT GOD.
I came to terms with the sale of the Northfield campus a few years ago. But to pound another nail in the cross, the campus has been sold to a crazy fanatical right-wing Christian company named fuckin’ Hobby Lobby. The campus is going to be turned into the home of C.S. Lewis College, a school named for the author of the Lion, Witch and whatever novels. Read their mission statement:
The College will be rooted in the historic Christian faith and so structured as to ensure its fidelity to that profession. It will be characterized by a firm commitment to “Mere Christianity,” and therefore be inclusive of Christians of all traditions. In the spirit of C.S. Lewis, the envisioned college will actively encourage opportunities to discover the vitality and profound relevance of the Christian faith as it is lived openly within the larger pluralistic setting of mainstream colleges and universities
Okay, scary enough, right? WELL, brace yourself. The Green Family (owners of Hobby Lobby) donated 70 million dollars in 2008 to keep Oral Roberts University OPEN. If I had 70 million I would shut the shit down.
All I can say to the future holy-rolling inhabitants of the Northfield campus: you better do some major exorcisms in those beautiful buildings lest the ghosts of free-thinkers, Jews, druggies, and teenage sex-havers (gay and straight) haunt you at night.
READ ABOUT HOBBY LOBBY’S GAY HATIN’ WAYS (Keep in mind that this article comes from an ultra-conservative paper in the ultra born-again christian Colorado Springs, Colorado.)
C.S. Lewis College lists NMH as one of it’s PARTNERS. (and not in a domestic partnership kinda way) Update: I straight called NMH and inquired about this partnership. They didn’t know CSLC had post this misinformation and it was subsequently removed this afternoon.

It’s nice that they are “inclusive of Christians of all traditions.”
This is a sad sad turn of events.
Wow, I was all for it until I saw your post. I mean, D.L. Moody was about as Eveangelical as they come. But Oral Roberts loving Hobby Lobbies? Well, that’s pretty off. Should be a rollicking reunion!
As someone who has spent his life two blocks from the campus….. It’s a wonderful thing to see the lawns mowed again, the paint and windows being repaired, the ‘condemned’ signs coming off of half the buildings….. Anything and anyone loving that campus is better than watching it go to bones again.
